Corvette C6.R GT2 livery looks... sharp

(Feb 16th 2010)

Corvettes look sharp. Racing 'Vettes, even sharper. A competition-spec ZR1? Now we're talking.
After dominating the GT1 class seemingly for longer than we can remember, the Corvette Racing team is dropping down to the GT2 category for the 2010 American Le Mans Series. There they hope to find the competition, dominated by Ferrari s and Porsche s, even fiercer, and indeed they did for the latter part of the 2009 season. This, however, is our first look at the finished new car.
The shot above was snapped at the garages of Pratt & Miller, the racing outfit contracted by GM
to develop and run the racing 'Vettes. Although the color scheme is the same yellow and black that's instilled fear into the hearts of most every other team on the grid, the 2010 C6.R, as you can see, gets a decidedly sharper paint job.
The bodywork is otherwise styled after the roadgoing Corvette ZR1, built atop an aluminum frame (instead of the GT1's steel), with steel brakes (in place of carbon-ceramic) and a downsized 5.5-liter V8 (replacing the 6.0- and 7.0-liter units employed in previous iterations). The season can't begin soon enough...

Reader Spy: Are you a new tuner Pontiac Firebird homage, the Chevy Camaro Z28, or something else?

(Feb 15th 2010)
Mystery Chevrolet Camaro-based prototype – click above for high-res gallery
The prototype was spotted in suburban Detroit area when its car cover partially blew off while parked, giving Mark the opportunity to capture his quarry. Unfortunately, the cover apparently never came all the way off, so we're left wondering what's been done to the back end. Judging by what we can see of the cover's outline, it doesn't appear to have been left alone, so our curiosity remains piqued. Thanks for the photos, Mark!

Autoblog tipster Mark has sent in these images of what appears to be some sort of Chevrolet Camaro body restyling kit that turns the Bowtie musclecar a latter-day Pontiac Firebird tribute. As posted on GMInsideNews forums, there is speculation that the mule could actually be a Camaro Z28, what with its big hood bulge and all, but the styling doesn't seem right to us, nor does the prototype's camouflage pattern. We suspect it's more likely an aftermarket affair, something along the lines of the Kevin Morgan Designs 'Phoenix' project, the ASC redux, or the Lingenfelter 455 T/A concept.

Chicago 2010: Chevrolet rolls out Caprice Police Car

(Feb 12th 2010)
Chevrolet Caprice PPV – Click above for high-res image gallery
Well, what do you know. Chevy brought just such a vehicle to the Chicago Auto Show'> Pontiac G8 available before GM decided to shutter the brand, this Zeta would be based on the longer version of that platform as used by the Holden Statesman and be known as the 2011 Chevrolet Caprice police patrol vehicle. Late last year, General Motors announced that it would build a Zeta-based Police Car for North American duty. Though there was already a perfectly good conceptform, complete with a refurbished Toughbook panel from Panasonic attached to the center console.

Being a long-wheelbase Zeta, the Caprice PPV has plenty of room for a divided cockpit with what appears to be a plexiglass barrier protecting the driver and front passenger from whatever or whomever happens to be confined to the rear. Other interesting tidbits include a number of storage locations, including one for weapons between the two front seats.

We're sure the cops will appreciate the E85-compatible 6.0-liter V8 and the 355 horsepower and 385 pound-feet of torque it puts out. Now if only GM could find a way to put just such a Caprice (or, would that be a proper Impala SS?) in every single Chevrolet dealership around the country, they may really be on to something.

Video: GM smokes out Chevy Equinox; figures out how many ping pong balls fit inside

(Feb 11th 2010)

From our vantage point the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox is a monumental upgrade from the Bowtie brand's first generation midsize crossover. General Motors seems to be pretty proud of its work as well, as the automaker has poured cash into advertising its first post-bankruptcy success story.

One such marketing exercise involving the Equinox is captured in the General's inaugural Department 180 video. The videos seek to showcase the improved quality of Chevy-branded vehicles, with the engineers co-starring in the spots along with the cars and trucks. The Equinox gets the first turn at bat in the new series, with employees showing how they tested the crossover to ensure that it had a quiet cabin.

The first test involves filling the cabin with a thick cloud of smoke, then checking every crevice of the vehicle to ensure nothing seeps out. The second, unofficial test is slightly less scientific and you can check out both in the video after the jump.

Chicago 2010: Internet Car and Truck of the Year awards handed out, Neff FTW

(Feb 10th 2010)

For the first time, the Internet Car and Truck of the year organization presented Mazda and Chevrolet with a number of well-earned awards at the Chicago Auto Show. Mazda won with its freshly updated 2010 Mazda3 in the car category, beating out such worthy candidates as the Ford Fusion Hybrid and the Shelby GT500.

However, the big winner was Chevrolet, with the Equinox taking home prizes for two separate categories – Internet Truck of the Year and Consumer Internet Truck of the Year – while the Camaro snagged the Consumer Internet Car of the Year. Our particular favorite award, though, was for the Internet Automotive Journalist of the Year.

Why? Well, it was won by none other than our very own and highly esteemed Editor-in-Chief, John Neff. For those keeping track, Neff has won the award every single year that it's been presented. Nicely done, John.
